Megachurch Pastor Comes Out — In His Own Words

04 Nov

Here is an extended video of the message Bishop Jim Swilley sharing with his congregation. It is definitely worth watching.

I don’t agree with everything he says, but I love his heart and the heart of his ministry. I do have to say that if i had come out on my own to my church, this is not how I would have been received!

I am praying for Bishop Swilley and Church in the Now.

Please take the time to watch and let me know what you think.

I am not convinced that all divorce inherently means one has not managed their households well. I also think that Paul is talking about a "while they serve" and "leading yup to serving" standard. Given Paul’s belief in amazing grace, hard to believe he wouldn’t extend second chances to divorcees. I think if you believe that grace is real and efficacious — and if you believe the cross is real and efficacious — I think you have to believe in a theology of 2nd (and 3rd and 4th … and 77th) chances.

I also think the "personal life" statement needs to be taken in context — he wasn’t talking about sin issues or secrecy, just a sense of privacy. For example, if a single straight pastor is in a healthy dating relationship, they should be allowed some privacy (not secrecy) in that relationship and people in the congregation shouldn’t be wondering "i wonder if he is a good date" etc, while he is preaching — this is just another form of gossip.
