Evangelical Pastor Comes Out

This is a powerful video and story… I wish this had been my story and that I had the wise council and courage to have done this in my own life before I lost my ministry and church family. I am not confident that the response would have been the same, but it would have been worth the risk.

Watch the video and then let me know what you think:

Scott Lively is a Very Wise Man

OK… maybe not.  This would be hysterical, except that Lively and his Abiding Truth Ministries (link) (and American Family Association) are actually respected among some right-wing, fundamentalist Christians… he has also been a supporter, along with people like Lou Engle, the Ugandan anti-homosexuality bill.

You, of course, can draw your own conclusions:

Psalm 25

I believe that the public proclamation of scripture can be the most powerful and transformative experience of a corporate worship service.  I think it is sad that the art of public proclamation of the scriptures has been so lost in so many evangelical and Protestant churches.

At the last church I served at, we worked hard to bring creativity and focus to this aspect of the service. Too often we see the reading of the scripture as a footnote to the sermon; bt really it is the other way around.  The proclamation of the scriptures is primary and the sermon is simply commentary and application.

Check this video out of the proclamation of Psalm 25… it is powerful!

What If Your Father is the Most Powerful Person In the World?

Do you ever wonder what it must be like to have your Father be the most powerful person in the world?

In our day, the most powerful person in the world is probably Barack Obama.  The power that comes with his office is unfathomable to most of us.  I suspect that — whether we are red or blue — if any of us would find ourselves invited to he Oval Office for a meeting with him, we would be humbled, respectful and would honor his office well.  I also think we would be rightfully a bit intimidated, nervous and maybe even a little fearful.

The President has the power to wage war… and has access to the nuclear codes that could literally annihilate the planet. When he speaks, hundreds of millions listen.

I wonder what it must be like to be Sasha or Malia Obama?

Do they get to hide under the desk of their father in the Oval Office?  What is it like to have your Father be the most powerful man in the world?  Do they fear him? Salute him? After all, he is not only their dad, but he is also their President.

But I suspect that their relationship to their Father is different than anyone else’s.  Being part of the family changes the dynamics.  He is still president, but he is primarily their daddy.

And here is the crazy part…

HE is (literally) the most powerful being in the universe.  He spoke creation into existence, He is he creator and judge of all, He is holy and righteous in all his ways, with a word He can destroy or create. There is none more powerful than He.

And yet… He is our HEAVENLY ABBA… our HEAVENLY DADDY.  For we have been adopted into his family and now are sons and daughters of the most high!  And that changes our relationship to Him forever!

1 JOHN 3:1-2

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

ROMANS 8:1-2, 15-17

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death… For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

And now go read Luke 15 again… [link]

Dwell on the reality of what it means to be adopted into the family of your HEAVENLY DADDY! It is stunning in its implications!
