Remembering High School

08 Jun

This has little to do with the topics I normally cover on this blog… but worth sharing.

My friend Matt Bond, who is the high school ministries director at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church (that’s right, John Ortberg’s church), recently gave this message about why youth ministry matters.

I was in full time youth ministry for five years, worked as a cook at a Christian youth camp for several summers, and met Christ through a high school outreach ministry. I am passionate about youth ministry and its centrality in an effective and growing, healthy church.

Matt is one of the sharpest people I know and this message nails it. He is also one of the most compassionate, talented, humble and dynamic followers of Jesus I have had the privilege to know and work with over the years.

His message caused me to remember back to my high school days — among other things, high school was a time when I both started dealing with being gay for the first time AND met Christ for the first time… crazy to think both how little changes (in terms of the issues we deal with) and also how much we change as we follow Jesus.

Anyway, it is worth your time to watch Matt’s message if you care about high school students at all — and even more if you don’t!

Great job Matt!
